From Illness to Strength: A Story of Courage, Resilience and Starting Again

Runner of the month interview with Tracy Horsfall

When you see Tracy out on a run now, strong, confident and often towards the front of the intermediate group, you would never guess the journey she’s been on to get here. Her story is one of resilience, rebuilding, and proving that no matter where you start, incredible things are possible.

“I had to rebuild from the ground up…”

Before joining RLJ, Tracy kept active by walking her dogs across Redhill Common and the surrounding areas. Always one to challenge herself, she began adding hills into her daily walks, gently building strength without realising just how far she would go.

But her journey hasn’t been straightforward.

In the late 90s, Tracy became seriously unwell after a flu-type virus and never fully recovered. At a time when there was very little understanding or support for Chronic Fatigue / M.E., her life changed dramatically.

“It completely changed the family dynamic,” Tracy explains. “But I did my best to maintain my role as a wife and mother.”

Years later, in 2019, things began to shift. Her symptoms started to ease, and slowly, she began to rebuild her life. At the same time, she faced significant personal changes, a huge challenge, but one she met with determination.

“Going from virtually housebound and dependent on my husband to being alone was a lot. I had to rebuild from the ground up. I had to relearn the most basic skills like crossing the road and using a card in shops. It was scary… but exciting at the same time.”

One step at a time

Tracy started with what she could manage, walking.

“Every day I would walk my dogs, slowly at first, and the minute it became easy I would increase the distance.”

Progress didn’t happen overnight. It took years to build the strength and stamina she has today, a powerful reminder that small, consistent steps can lead to extraordinary change.

“At 58, I wanted to prove I could run 5K”

Tracy joined RLJ with a simple but powerful goal:

“I felt physically fit enough to push myself a little harder, so I joined with the intention of proving to myself that at 58, I could run 5k.”

Like so many women, she remembers her first session clearly.

“Everyone was so kind and encouraging, and as soon as we set off I knew I was hooked. The combination of running and chatting was irresistible.”

Confidence, strength… and belonging

Since joining, Tracy has seen a transformation not just physically, but mentally too.

“Joining the group has definitely boosted my confidence and my physical fitness.”

But what truly stands out is the sense of community.

“I love being part of the group, forming bonds, encouraging one another and achieving personal goals. Whether you are at the front or the back, it doesn’t matter. It’s the fact that we are all together, supporting one another.”

A mindset that keeps her moving forward

Tracy has always embraced a challenge, and that mindset has carried her through both life and running.

“I’m very goal-oriented. If something gets easier for me, I’ll want to aim higher.”

Of course, there are tough days too.

“There have been many times when I’ve found running difficult. My mindset can be my biggest hurdle sometimes, but I dig deep and keep going. The encouragement from our wonderful coaches and the other women is what really gets me through.”

“Don’t overthink it… just do it”

For any woman wondering if running - or RLJ - is for her, Tracy’s advice is simple:

“Don’t overthink it - just do it. You’ll be joining a group of women who will go out of their way to encourage and support you on your journey.”

Giving back

Tracy’s journey has come full circle, and she’s already thinking about how she can support others.

“Yes, I would love to become a coach one day. I’ve received so much encouragement and support that I’d love to give that back.”

Her understanding of what it takes - physically and mentally - makes her an incredibly inspiring role model for others starting out.

“I cried…”

When Tracy found out she had been named Runner of the Month, her reaction says everything about her humility.

“I cried! I was so shocked, there are some seriously amazing women in the group. It’s such an honour.”

And in true Tracy style, she turned the spotlight onto others:

“The real heroes of our group are the young mums, caring for kids, sometimes working, and still running. It’s so inspiring.”

A story that will inspire so many
