We’re so excited to shine the spotlight on another incredible Reigate Ladies Jogger, Claire Thomas, our Runner of the Month for October!
Claire embodies everything we love about the RLJ community: enthusiasm, resilience, and a true sense of joy in running. Since joining the club, she’s thrown herself into every session with energy and commitment, always with a big smile on her face!
This summer, Claire stepped up to the Tempo Group to challenge herself, and she hasn’t looked back. From braving a downpour on Reigate Hill to powering through a wasp sting mid-run around Mercer’s Lake, nothing has stopped her, not even the elements!
Her cheerful determination and consistency make her a true inspiration to all of us at RLJ.
An interview wih Claire
What first inspired you to start running, and how did joining Reigate Ladies Joggers help?
I’ve run on and off since finding it as a new hobby during Covid, but I never quite made it stick. Molly (a fellow RLJ runner) and I also ran together sometimes, and then she told me about the group. Since joining RLJ, I’ve absolutely loved it and for the first time in years, I’ve actually stayed consistent!
What are the biggest benefits of running with a supportive group like RLJ?
The motivation to run every week and the encouragement and support from all the coaches and fellow runners. It really helps you get it done while making it fun. I’ve also met so many lovely people; it really feels like a family. And as a woman, it’s great to run and feel safe while doing so.
Can you share a challenging moment and the rewards you’ve experienced from making running a habit?
Running the Run Reigate 10K was huge for me!
It was my first race ever, and my first 10K in five years! That hill at the end was a killer, but thanks to RLJ (and our runs with “Hilly Helen!”) I managed a time I was really proud of. Running has become my way to switch off and focus on nothing but putting one foot in front of the other.
How do you fit your running, including RLJ sessions, into your busy life, and what tips would you give others?
Running with the group gives me a set spot in my diary every week. When I used to run on my own, I’d find excuses not to go, but now I look forward to every session! Having something booked in helps build routine and keeps me consistent.
For someone unsure if they’re “a runner” or if a group is right for them, what’s your most inspiring advice?
I never thought I was a “runner” either, and it felt daunting at first. But with consistency, you’ll always improve and you’ll surprise yourself with how far you can go. If you’re thinking about it, just give it a go! You’ll be supported every step of the way with RLJ.
Final Thoughts
Claire’s journey is a brilliant reminder that running isn’t about being the fastest, it’s about;
1. Showing up
2. Finding joy in movement
3. Celebrating progress.
Her positivity, perseverance, and energy have made her such a valued part of our RLJ community.
Congratulations, Claire! We’re so proud (and grateful) to have you running with us!
