Runner of the Month: Leah Boylan

This month we were so excited to celebrate our absolute star, Leah Boylan

Leah joined Reigate Ladies Joggers after moving back to the area in 2024, and in a relatively short space of time she has become one of our most consistent, enthusiastic and encouraging members. You’ll find her at Monday and Wednesday evenings, Friday Early Birds and track on Sundays, always smiling, always giving 100%, and always cheering others on.

What makes Leah’s story so inspiring is that she never even considered herself “a runner” before joining RLJ. Like so many women, she believed the myth that running was only for people who were naturally fast. Her journey shows exactly why that simply isn’t true.

Here’s what Leah had to say about her experience.

What first inspired you to start running, and how did joining Reigate Ladies Joggers help?

Having recently moved back to the area I was looking for something to try to get out in the evenings and I found RLJ on Instagram. Before this I had never really gone running but wanted to try something new so I signed up for the beginners course. I really enjoyed the support and the fact that nobody is left behind and this is what spurred me on to continue after the beginners course finished.

What are the biggest benefits of running with a supportive group like RLJ?

Running with a group, particularly when it's dark and cold, is so much more motivating and safer than going by yourself. It was also a great way for me to get to know the area a bit more from the different routes.

Can you share a challenging moment and the rewards you’ve experienced from making running a habit?

I have a busy job and work from home three days a week, but the evenings I tend to run are on my office days and my office is in North London. Sometimes it feels easier to cancel because I'm tired, but I've found that by showing up for the run I feel so much better compared to just staying in.

How do you fit your RLJ sessions into your busy life, and what tips would you give others?

It can be hard, but I would say I always feel better for going running. I have recently started the early Friday morning sessions and fitting something in before work is helpful. If I can't make a Monday or Wednesday evening, I know that I still have another option. I love that RLJ has so many sessions to pick from. I would say to others to try the different times to see what works best.

For someone unsure if they’re “a runner” or if a group is right for them, what’s your most inspiring advice?

I never thought of myself as a runner, but I would say that the beginners course is a great place to start, particularly if you're unsure or nervous about running.

Leah’s journey is a perfect reminder that running isn’t about being fast, it’s about showing up. It’s about trying something new, pushing past old assumptions, and discovering what you’re capable of in a supportive community.

From a complete beginner to one of our most dedicated regulars, Leah embodies everything RLJ stands for: consistency, positivity, courage and encouragement.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not a runner,” maybe Leah’s story is your sign that you absolutely can be.

Leah, we are so proud of you and so lucky to have you as part of our RLJ family.
